Gaur The Indian Bison in Gorumara

Gorumara National Park is situated in the Terai region of the eastern Himalayas. It is one of the popular National Park in West Bengal. It falls under the Malbazar sub-division of Jalpaiguri district. The park lies on the flood plains of the Murti river and the Raidak river. Jaldhaka river, a tributary of the Brahmaputra river is the main river of the park.

Gorumara was established during the British rule. The park was a reserve forest since 1895. It was declared a Wildlife Santuary in the year 1949. In the year 1994, Gorumara successfully acquired the title of "National Park". There are a number of villages around the park. Some of them are Saraswati, Buddhuram, Bicha Bhanga, Chatna, Kalipur and Murti forest village. Most of the villagers work in the forest department to earn their daily bread.

Getting there: Gorumara is 75 km away from Siliguri. To get there one has to reach Siliguri. There are number of trains plying from Sealdah(Kolkata) to NJP(Siliguri) daily. One may also fly to Siliguri. The nearest airport is Bagdogra airport. After reaching Siliguri one has to hire a car to reach Gorumara. NH-31(NH-National Highway) leads the path to Gorumara.
Journey duration: Nearly 2 hours from Siliguri.
Best time to visit: Throughout the year. The park remains closed during the monsoon that ranges from mid June to mid September.
View Points:There are a number of Watch towers located at various points of the park to get live view of wild animals.

Accomodations in guest houses are available in Murti, Dhupjhora. Cottages are found in Kalipur village and Lataguri. There are also a number of government guest houses under the forest department. There are a number of private resorts available for halting. Some of them are:

1.Silver Ridge Resort in Gorumara.
2.Panchavati Resort in Gorumara.
3. Murti Resort close to Murti river.

To avoid rush of tourists during season it is adviced to book the guest houses quiet early (approximately 3 to 4months ago).

Main attraction: One-horned Asiatic Rhinoscerous is the center of attraction.
Other attraction:The park is rich in carnivorous and herbivorous animals. They include Asian elephant, Sloth bear, Chital, Samber deer, Barking deer, Hog deer, various types squirrels. There are also a few number of Leopards found. The park comprises a large variety of birds such as Scarlet Minivet, Sunbird, Asian Paradise Flycatcher, Spangled Drongo and great Indian hornbill, woodpeckers, etc.
The park is a residence of a large number of snakes, like Indian Python and King Cobra.
The forest has Sal, Teak, Rain tree and Simul trees. Thera are also bamboo groves in plenty.
