Gantok
Gantok is the capital of Indian State Sikkim and is located in the eastern part of the Himalayan ranges in the Sivalik Hills. Approximately the population of Gantok is about 50,000. The altitude of Gantok is about 1,700 mt. The Hill Station is famous for tourism and Tourism Industries are growing rapidly due to fact that more and more tourist are visiting this place every year. Despite of the cultural differences among the people of Gantok religious harmony is maintained and the town has shown that “Unity in Diversity” exists in Sikkim. People of Gantok generally includes Nepalis, Lepchas and Bhutia. Several monasteries, centres for Tebetology and religious educational institutions are present.

Town of Gantok
Geography

Gantok is present in the eastern lower part of the Himalayan range in the Sivalik Hills and its coordinate is 27.33, 88.62. The altitude of the town is about 1,700 mt. Two streams Ranikhola and Roro Chu flows around Gantok and they joins Teesta at Singtam in south. Precambrian rocks are found in most part of Sikkim including Gantok which contains schists and phyllites due to which landslides are frequent. The town falls under seismic zone-IV. Most of the region is covered with forest which includes birch, poplar, elm, bamboos and oak including coniferous and evergreen trees. During November and December flowers like sunflower and marigold are seen in the region.

Climate

Gantok is present Himalayan mountain ranges and so it enjoys a mild temperate climate throughout the year. Gantok has five seasons namely, summer, monsoons, winter, autumn and spring. The average minimum temperature of the town in winter is about 4 °C and the average maximum temperature is about 22 °C. During June to September the monsoon season prevails in the town with intense rainfall which often causes landslides,  blocking  the roadlink and cutting it from rest of Country. Winter temperature lies between 4 °C and 7 °C. Snowfall and temperature below freezing point are rare. During sping and autumn the temperature remains mild and clear skies can be seen with sunshine. Fog covers Gantok during winter and monsoon.

Different cultures nad religion exists in Gantok maintain and they all maintain a perfect harmony. The town shows that “Unity in Diversity” exists in Sikkim. Besides the festivals like Dussera, Diwali, Holi, Christmas local festivals are also celebrated. People of Gantok generally includes Nepalis, Lepchas and Bhutia. Several monasteries centres like Rumtek Monastry  for Tebetology and religious educational institutions are present. Some other festivals which are celebrated in town are Ram Navami, Buddha Jayanti, Maghe Sankranti, birthday of Loosong,  Dalai Lama, Saga Dawa and Bhumchu. Momo is a popular food in Gantok which contains pork, beef and other vegetables like cabbage. Thukpa, a kind of noodle is also very famous in the town. Other noodle based food found in Gantok are thanthuk, chowmeins, wonton and gyathuk. People are very enthusiastic about music and likes Western rock, Nepali rock and Hindi pop songs. Games like Foothball, archery and cricket are most popular in Gantok.

Gantok is one of the famous Hill Station in north-east region of India. It is connected to Siliguri through NH31A. The nearest rail station for reaching Gantok is the New Jalpaiguri Railway Station in Siliguri which is about 125km from Gantok. The major airport near to Gantok is the Bagdogra airport which is about 130km from Gantok and beside it Helicopter service is also available connecting Bagdogra and Gantok. Regular Buses and Taxis to Gantok are available which connects it to other part including Siliguri, Kalimgpong and Darjeeling.
