The Queen of Hills Darjeeling is situated in the state of West Bengal in India at an average elevation of 2,134 m. Darjeeling is about 80 km north to Siliguri. This hill station is connected with Siliguri by world famous Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (Toy Train) and as well as by bus and small vehicles. Darjeeling is famous for Darjeeling Tea. Darjeeling has plenty of tourist spots like Tiger Hill, Dhirdham Temple, Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, Lloyd's Botanical Gardens, Batasia Loop, Tenzing Norgay Himalayan Mountaineering Institute etc.

Geography

Darjeeling is located in the Darjeeling-Himalayan Hill region at an average elevation of 6,982 ft (2,128 m). Darjeeling lies on the Y-shaped Darjeeling-Jalapahar range with the base resting at Jalapahar and Katapahar. The north-western arm ends in the valley near Tukver Tea Estate and the north-eastern arm suddenly ends in the Lebong spur. Darjeeling lies in the lower Himalayan range in the Shiwalik Hills. The soil is generated is not suitable for agriculture as it cannot hold water between rains. The soil is generally composed of conglomerate formations and sandstone. The region has sharp slopes and looses topsoil which sometime leads to landslides. Landslides of often seen during monsoons. Darjeeling is also famous for tea plantations. Deciduous forests consisting birch, oak, elm and poplar can be seen and evergreen coniferous trees of wet alpine are also present in Darjeeling.

Darjeeling lies in the lower range of Himalayas and it has five distinct seasons, namely, spring, autumn, summer, winter and monsoons. Summers are generally mild and it last from May to June with maximum temperature rarely crossing 25 °C (77 °F). Monsoon season starts from the month of June to September. Heavy torrential rains occurs during monsoon which often causes landslides that sometime block the road link between Darjeeling and rest of the country. The average winter temperature lies between 5 °C to 7 °C with minimum temperature of −8 °C (17.6 °F). During monsoon and winter mist and fog covers the region. The annual mean temperature of Darjeeling is 12 °C (53 °F).

Bagdogra airport is the nearest domestic airport which is about 90 km away from Darjeeling. The nearest International airport is situated in Kolkata which is 500 km from Darjeeling. Flights are available from Kolkata to Bagdogra provided by Indian Airlines and Jet Airways and it takes about 55 min.	The New Jalpaiguri Railway Station in Siliguri is the nearest railway station from Darjeeling which is about 88 km away from Darjeeling. Direct rail link is present between Siliguri and Darjeeling in Toy train (Darjeeling Himalayan Railway). The journey from siliguri to Darjeeling in Toy train takes about 8 hrs.	Darjeeling is well connected by road with Siliguri, Gangtok, Bagdogra and Kathmandu across Nepal border. Buses, taxes and other vehicles are also available which takes around 2-3 hrs to reach Darjeeling from Siliguri.
